Mourvèdre is gaining great respect and desirability in Washington State. The Mourvèdre comes from Beaucastel stock via Tablas Creek nurseries, planted at Ciel du Cheval on Red Mountain. In the beginning our purpose in planting Mourvèdre was for our southern-Rhône style blend (“Sirocco”), but we couldn’t resist producing a small quantity as a single varietal. It has proved to be a very popular decision! It is our single most popular bottling, particularly on restaurant wine lists.

Until now, this varietal has solely been used as a blending component at Airfield. The 2009 vintage exuded such complexity and balance that we felt compelled to showcase it as a stand-alone wine. Layers of white pepper, truffle, spice, oak, dark plum, and blackberries unite in an exceptional harmony of flavors. Full-bodied with velvety tannins, this well-balanced wine pairs great with lamb, braised short ribs, peppered steak, and richly flavored stews.

Bright, clean, powerful, extracted cherry with hints of rhubarb. The aromas of raspberry jam, with floral overtones, are complimented by subtle oak smokiness which leads to intense flavors of plums and allspice. Wonderfully expansive fine grain tannins and firm acidity layer in harmony with nicely balanced fruit. Thoroughly enjoyable in its youth, this wine will emerge even better with age.
