The Wallace family, Dee, Jerry, and Mike moved to the Lower Yakima Valley from Seattle in 1972 and planted one of the first winegrape vineyards on the Roza Irrigation District. Mike had just come from graduate school at the University of California at Davis, where he specialized in Agricultural Management and Enology, the science of winemaking. Mike’s father, Jerry Wallace, had been a Detective Lieutenant on the Seattle Police Force. “ I’d been involved in law enforcement for a long time and when Mike and I independently got interested in wine, I said to him, ‘Your Mom and I would like to come and join you in this venture, and we did’,” the elder Wallace said. Jerry managed the vineyard while it was coming into bearing and Mike worked as a research associate in what was later known as The Wine Project at WSU, Prosser. That program was headed up by the man later known as the “Father of Washington Wine” was, Dr. Walter Clore. “Walt was a great guy to work for. He gave me a list of projects that I was responsible for completing and then told me that I could do whatever else that interested me. So I got to study such diverse things as bird depredation in vineyards to such seemingly esoteric things as the productivity of grapevine secondary buds. It was great fun and I probably should have been paying to work there what with all I learned,” Mike Wallace said. Mike also taught wine appreciation and winemaking classes at Columbia Basin College for several years. A number of his early students are prominent growers and winery owners today. Coincidentally, The Wine Project funding ran out about the same time the Wallace’s vineyard began to bear enough crop to make wine and in 1976, the Wallace’s bought an old cement-block building just-off Wine Country Road in Prosser, harvested their first crop that fall, and began making award-winning wines. “ Believe it or not, 60% of the wine consumed in the U.S at that time was Rose’ and in those days, you could hardly give a away red wine. So we made most of our wine from varieties such a Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer. Not knowing any better, we did grow and make some Cabernet and later Merlot. I made those reds in a heavier, ageable style- a good part of the reason they are in such good shape and so tasty today.” Mike Wallace said. During their nearly 35 years in the Yakima Valley wine business, the Wallace’s have been very active in wine industry organizations. Mike was a founder and president of the Washington Wine Institute and the Yakima Valley Winegrowers Association, now Wine Yakima Valley. Mike also helped to lobby several bills through the state legislature that serve as the foundation for the Washington Wine Commission and many of today’s wine laws. Mike also helped to organize and fund the Prosser Wine and Food Fair, now in it’s 25th year. Jerry and the late Dee Wallace founded the Roza Chapter of the Enological Society of the Pacific Northwest, a local wine consumer organization.
