They say behind every winery, there is a great story. Our great story began in August of 1997 on a University of Kentucky sponsored bus tour of Missouri wine country. I had just completed my B.S. Degree in Food Science from the University of Kentucky and planted my family’s farm in Eastern Kentucky with several hundred grapevines. At this point the wine seed was firmly planted in my soul and after learning of the week long wine tasting trip to Missouri I quickly packed my bags. We boarded a bus in Bowling Green early on August 4, 1997 and I found a seat in the middle of the bus so that I could continue my reading of the Enology text I had brought for company. Soon after I resumed my reading a dark haired young man took the seat behind me. I remember thinking to myself as I quickly assessed the other members of the tour that how odd we, the young man and I, must seem to everyone on board for we must have been the youngest members of the wine tasting tour by 30 years. It didn’t talk long for me to learn that the young man was Ben O’Daniel, son of Eddie O’Daniel, owner of one of the first wineries in Kentucky, Springhill Vineyards. As we began to exchange our life stories as they relate to the world of wine Ben slowly worked his way into the seat beside mine were he remained for the course of the tour. We spent the rest of the week together exploring our shared passion in tasting and evaluating wine, and discussing various vineyard and winery management practices. The Jean Farris story began on a wine tasting tour of Missouri when I found my best friend and partner. |

Winemaker Ben and Jeanie O'Daniel |
Ben and Jeanie’s fifteen years in the wine industry as winery consultants has enabled them to open their doors for the first time under their own label, Jean Farris, with the focus on creating fabulous wines by growing and selecting some of the most sought after grapes in Kentucky, affordably priced for the novice and connoisseur alike. Premium wine has always been the goal but Ben and Jeanie have never forgotten that wine is meant simply to be enjoyed. Ben and Jeanie believe wine is as much apart of the table as food. Therefore to enhance the wine experience, Jean Farris is pleased to offer an unforgettable dining experience with the Bistro at the winery. Jean Farris is creating fresh regional cuisine that focuses on the reactions between food and wine to create a properly balanced dish that complements the wine.
