    		 Sayre Fulkerson, 6th generation on the family farm, with his wife Nancy, opened the winery in 1989 with a release of only 1,000 cases of wine. This was a logical expansion from their beginning venture of selling grape juice when they acquired Jensen Juice from Glenora Wine Cellars in 1979. They gradually built a customer base that exceeds 5,000 home winemakers today.

    Sayre, also the winemaker, has slowly increased the production of wine over the ensuing years to maintain the distinctive fine quality that has awarded his wines with hundreds of medals. He currently produces 15,000 cases annually for retail and wholesale use.

    Sayre graduated from Cornell in 1975 with a degree in pomology, the study of fruit production. He began his career in winemaking at Glenora Wine Cellars as an assistant to John Williams, presently at Frogs Leap in California. Nancy graduated from Elmira College and handles the financial end of their business.

    Another hat Sayre wears (no wonder his hair is greying) is overseeing the care of 90 acres of vineyards. The vineyards are a mix of well known grapes and some lesser known varieties that he has introduced to his wine list such as Traminette, Dornfelder, Vincent and Himrod, known and loved as Matinee. He also grows varieties exclusively for his juice customers.

    All this hard work has generated a successful enterprise that demanded more room. Construction of a new building, on the same site as the old one, began in May 2004. The new Fulkerson Winery tasting room, expanded juice plant and retail/gift shop opened on February 18th, 2005 to great acclaim and fan fare.

  • An interspecific hybrid that was developed in Ontario, Canada at the Vineland Research Station in 1967. Vincent was developed to grow well in a cold climate and is the last variety to be harvested in the fall. Only two other wineries in the US produce this as a varietal.   • This wine is from interspecific hybrids named Himrod and Lakemont. They are seedless eating grapes and their unique flavors reflect this. The fermentation is stopped early resulting in all natural sugar and lower alcohol. Fulkerson is the only winery producing this wine. Two thumbs up…..rave reviews are pouring in about our highly unique wine made from seedless table grapes. Heavenly mint aromas are followed by dazzling sweet, yet light, tastes of green melon, kiwi and citron.

  • A vinifera crossed with a labrusca hybrid by P. H. Provost in 1850. This older variety was mainly used in sparkling wine originally. Delaware produces moderate yields of red grapes and is winter hardy. Sugars are normally higher and acidity is lower than Catawba. A difficult wine to find that is produced as a varietal. This intriguing old native variety has a light tropical fruit nose. The sweet, lush taste of ripe pear has apple and spice in the finish creating a warm afterglow.

  • A native variety produced by a cross of vinifera by J. Moore in Brighton, NY in 1870. Diamond has often been compared to another native grape named Niagara. However, it is crisper and is not as foxy tasting. Our rare gem can best be described as liguid grapes in a glass. Sweet and grapey, but not overdone. Enjoy this nectar as you cozy up to the fireplace and relax.

  • Developed by J. F. Ravat, a French hybridizer, in the 1920's. It is a cross between Pinot Nior and a Seibel hybrid. It is also known as Vignoles. Natural high acidity must be balanced with sweetness. Enticingly different!   • A French-American hybrid developed by J. L. Vidal in Bordeaux. It is one of the finest white hybrid grapes. The grapes were frozen naturally on the vine and havested and pressed while still frozen. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness and then iced and pressed. The golden color points out it's intense concentration. A smokey orange marmalade and vanillin nose leads to a rich sumptuous taste of a peachy orange sweet tart. A wee bit to end a great day.
