It was the dream of a young Dutch immigrant to grow quality grapes and produce truly outstanding wines. After his arrival in the United States shortly after World War II, John Van Ruiten settled in the rich farmlands of the Lodi area. His desire to have his own land was quickly realized when in the early 1950’s, and with his personal ‘sweat equity’, John bought his first old vine Zinfandel vineyard and began growing wine grapes in the Lodi Appellation.
Five decades later, our family farms over 800 acres of wine grapes, with only our very best fruit destined to carry out the family name. After more than fifty years, our ambition became a reality as the Van Ruiten Family Winery was built just prior to the 2000 harvest. Three generations of family now work together to tend to the vineyards and manage our winery. We as a family believe that hard work and an uncompromising commitment to top quality are the cornerstones of our business.

Winemaker Ryan Leeman
In 2003 Ryan moved to California to join the Van Ruiten Family Winery. Van Ruiten has over five decades of producing top quality wine grapes. Now coupled with their state of the art facility and Ryan’s passion for excellence, the Van Ruiten Family is positioned to be a leader for super premium wines from Lodi, California. Ryan has crafted numerous gold medal wines for Van Ruiten including his 2002 Old Vine Zinfandel that was rated 98 points. Ryan’s most recent accomplishment was the 2006 Old Vine Zinfandel which was voted “Best in California” at the Lodi International Wine Competition in 2008. He assures us that more are to follow these award-winning Zinfandels.<br><br> In Ryan’s words, “The Van Ruiten Family possesses all the elements to make us one of California’s most recognized producers – top quality estate vineyards, a state of the art winery, and an experienced team to help us realize this goal.”<br>

Carignane was the most widely planted red varietal in France. It also is grown in Italy, Spain, Algeria and Israel. It once was the most planted variety in the new world. Dark ruby color moving to garnet, the wine displays red cherry, spice, vanilla and caramel reminding me of a beautiful cherry flamb©.
