Jim Bernau purchased the original site, the Estate Vineyard, in 1983 and planted Pinot noir (Pommard and Wadenswil clones), Chardonnay (Dijon and Espiguette)and Pinot gris. Literally thousands of Oregon wine enthusiasts joined in and contributed their time, money and effort to create a world class winery and talented artisans like Winemaker Forrest Klaffke and Vineyard Manager Efren Loeza invested themselves into crafting the best wine Mother Nature would give them. The Estate Vineyard (50 acres) is located in the heart of the Willamette Valley Appellation with south and southwest facing slopes dropping from 750’ in elevation to 500’, allowing for the best summer sun and air circulation. Yields are low, with the Estate Pinot noirpurposely limited to 1.75 tons per acre. The winery and underground cellar are carved into the top of an ancient volcanic flow, the well-drained soil red from its oxidized iron content. In 1997, we purchased one of Oregon’s oldest and most respected vineyards, Tualatin Estate, near Forest Grove. We have increased planting with new rootstocks and Dijon clones of Pinot noir (113, 114, 155, 667 and 777). Both the Estate and Tualatin vineyards are certifiedSalmon Safe and LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology).

    Winemaker Forrest Klaffke
The winemaker at Willamette Valley Vineyards is one determined soul. Forrest Klaffke is the first to arrive at the winery every day – a pattern he established as assistant winemaker 10 years ago. Forrest came to Oregon from winemaking in California at the request of then winemaker Dean Cox. They worked side-by side until Dean’s untimely passing in October 1995; the tragic loss was a blow to the winery, but Dean’s legacy to produce the highest quality wines was carried on by his apprentice. Forrest was promoted to winemaker after Joe Dobbes, the winemaker who followed Dean, started his own Oregon winery in late 2001. Now 50 years old, Forrest has worked in wineries for over 28 years. His first job was screening winegrape deliveries for quality at Bonded Winery #7, owned by United Vintners near Sacramento, California. Forrest moved on to work in Mondavi’s cellar and later at Sebastiani, rising to Cellar Foreman with a crew complement of forty. While gratifying, Forrest was interested in making small, hand crafted lots and perfected a style of port he now makes today “from scratch” in the cellar at Willamette Valley Vineyards (first making brandy and then the port). The key to great wine for Forrest is plant nutrition and attention given to every detail in the vineyard. He is narrowing the winery’s focus by increasing plantings at Tualatin Estate and concentrating his personal attention to those vines and soil. He continues to challenge himself and expand his awareness of new viticultural and enological practices through a commitment to continuing education at University of California at Davis. Forrest believes that a sharper focus on soil conditions and vine health will increase the aging potential of our wines. To that end, he continues the winery’s tradition of making fruit forward, viscous wines that express their origin – Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

    2005 Estate Pinot Noir
  • Appellation: Willamette Valley
  • Winemaker: Forrest Klaffke
  • A beautiful wine that truly expresses the terroir of the red, volcanic earth where it was grown. Aromas of red fruits, violets, clove, and tea leaf. Flavors mirror aromas with juicy bing cherry, lavender, earth and mineral followed by an elegant finish that lingers with spicy cinnamon and clove notes. The mouthfeel is round and generous with a concentrated mid-palate and good acidity. Appealing now, but will further reward those who cellar this wine. Peak drinkability is between 2007-2011.

    2006 Pinot Gris
  • Appellation: Willamette Valley

  • Bright, fruity, crisp style. Pretty aromas of fresh young pear, honey, starfruit, honeydew, and flower. Bold and crisp mouth feel with generous flavors of pear, mineral, melon, and spice, interwoven with well-balanced acidity. The Pinot Blanc, picked very ripe, adds emollient mouthfeel, and contributes to the Alsatian style.
