Winemaker Bill Wertzberger
Bill Wertzberger was raised in Dubuque, Iowa, in a familiy of eleven. In 1973, Bill joined the Army, which he calls “the path of least resistance for an 18 year-old trying to get out of a boring Midwest town.”
After two and a half years in Germany –where he developed a taste for wine – and shorter stints in San Antonio and Denver, Bill spent the last three years of his military service at the Presidio of San Francisco. Liking it, he stayed in The City after being discharged.
He then took a job as a floor runner at the Pacific Stock Exchange and eventually became the owner of a small customer service operation that checked trades on the Options Floor.
After 18 years in San Francisco, Bill moved to Sonoma County and started in a new line of work: Wine. He poured in tasting rooms, and after several different jobs in sales and production, he became the assistant winemaker to Dan Teldeschi at F. Teldeschi Winery in the Dry Creek Valley. That is where he makes Wertzberger Wines today. An accomplished artist, Bill paints the art he uses on his wine labels.
