Storm Cellar to Wine Seller Central Oklahoma has had its share of storms, but none, in recent history, have been as devastating as the F-5 May ‘99 tornado and another following the same path in 2003. Don and Annetta Neal were fortunate that only part of their roof was blown off and trees and fences were blown away when entire businesses were lost and an economy devastated in this Central Oklahoma, Route 66, community. An adjoining property on Historic Route 66 was also impacted by the ‘99 storm and was in the process of being cleaned up by family members, after the owner passed away. After a week without electricity, the family members were ready to head back to civilization and electricity. An offer was made and accepted and the clean-up started. In 2000, 300 grape vines were planted just for fun. After the addition of about 1000 more vines and the processing of the first crop by Annetta, a retired first grade teacher and aspiring winemaker, the thought of a commercial winery began to evolve. Another tornado in 2003 leveled a commercial warehouse owned by the Neal’s and provided the impetus for the winery. Located on Route 66 equal distance from the state’s two major metropolitan areas, in the town’s original 1902 Catholic Church building, . StableRidge Winery has played host, in the last year, thousands of customers from all 50 states and at least a dozen foreign countries. |
