Lionheart Wines was started with the philosophy of producing excellent premium affordable boutique wines to be shared with friends and family over great meals -- "Thoughtfully based around palate and plate". Life is too short to drink anything less than good wine! Our wines are made to be served with food. A good wine and a good meal by themselves are just that good. However, when the proper food wine pairing happens, a good wine and a good meal become outstanding and something you will remember for many years to come. We want to share our passion for food and wine to help you create your own amazing memories. Great wine starts in the vineyard....only great grapes can make great wine. So, we are sourcing our fruit from some of the best low-yield farmed vineyards throughout California based on viticultural practices, clonal selection and desired fruit characteristics. We are looking to produce the best possible wine through use of top quality oak barrels (when appropriate), top quality fruit, extended aging and blending to reach the product Leon approves of. We will always be looking for excellent fruit sources and trying new blends to produce the best wine for you.

Winemaker Leon Glover
Leon Glover is a self-taught chef and winemaker who started out his professional career in the high-tech field (software engineering and project management for 15 years) and ongoing business development (entrepreneurship and venture capital). He holds a BS in Computer Engineering from UC San Diego and an MBA from UC Irvine.

In December 2005, Leon and his wife, Jennifer, started Lionheart Wines with the idea of producing premium quality yet affordable food-friendly wines. Leon’s goal as a winemaker is to produce complex, layered and cellarable wines that stay true to the varietal, which are (as our slogan says) “thoughtfully based around palate and plate”. The focus is on varietals and blends that please the palate but are intended to accompany food, and not overwhelm it, contain the right acidity and balance with softer tannins. To date, Lionheart Wines has produced Marsanne, Roussanne, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sangiovese.

He has worked the last two harvests as a cellar rat at Crushpad in San Francisco focusing on the fermentation floor, supervising over 1900 fermentations for 14 different varietals from 50+ vineyards spread across Washington, Oregon and California. It has been a terrific opportunity to learn about barrel care, wine production, fermentation, yeast selections, lees contact, when to press and effects of oak on aging wine.

Leon has collected wines from all over the world for the last 21 years. The primary regions of influence are: California, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, and Spain. To further his wine knowledge and help train his palate for winemaking, he completed the WSET Diploma certification in 2008 with plans to enter the Master of Wine program in the next couple of years. The WSET program has heavily influenced Leon’s winemaking philosophy, by helping him recover from “California Palate” with a much greater appreciation of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, the Rhone, the Loire, Austria, Greece, South Africa, Argentina and Chile.

He has been a judge at the 2008 & 2009 Pinot Noir Shootout, 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Shootout and looks for more wine judging opportunities. He also blogs on wine related topics especially the production of Lionheart Wines.

  • Appellation: Napa Valley
  • Winemaker: Leon Glover
  • This is a blend of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Shikon, Vineyard X and Stagecoach vineyards plus a small amount of Napa Valley Merlot. Shikon vineyard provides powerful, fruit aromatics while the Stagecoach vineyard provides excellent mid-palate and ageworthy refined tannic backbone. Vineyard X provides expressive, ripe fruit with an affinity for new oak aging. The wine is easily identifiable as a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon due to the opaque ruby/black color and medium+ intensit... ...read more

    2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
  • Appellation: Napa Valley
  • Winemaker: Leon Glover
  • Vineyard X provides expressive, ripe fruit with an affinity for new oak aging. The Young-Inglewood fruit was fermented in two lots (a high-temperature fermentation for tannin and color extraction as well as a cool fermentation for good typicity) to provide complex blending elements for the finished wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 23 months in new French barrels for solid and refined oak tannins. The wine is a near classic Bordeaux-style blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Yountville Mal... ...read more

    2008 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast
  • Appellation: Sonoma Coast
  • Winemaker: Leon Glover
  • We love Pinot Noir as it a highly versatile food wine! The best Pinot Noir is made from a blend of many clones to get layered complexity in the wine. We cofermented clones 115 with 828 and 667 with 777 from two vineyards to give balanced blending components resulting in a wine with excellent fruit, tannins and acidity. The wine was aged in 33% new French oak for 14 months. This Pinot Noir is an opaque ruby with hints of violet color; intense aromas of baking spices, cherry (red and black),... ...read more

2007 White Hawk Vineyard, Sangiovese, Santa Barbara
  • Appellation: Santa Barbara County
  • Winemaker: Leon Glover
  • The fruit for this wine came from the very sandy White Hawk Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. The vines had to work extra hard resulting in concentrated and pure fruit rarely seen outside of Tuscany. A small amount (3%) of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the Young-Inglewood Vineyard was blended in to enhance the finish, aromas/flavor complexity and overall balance. The wine is a deep ruby/purple with pronounced aroma intensity of candied rose petals, violets, blueberry, and cherry (red, ... ...read more
