Cougar Crest is a 100% estate-grown winery. The Hansen's own and farm 50 acres of wine grapes, all in the Walla Walla Valley Appellation. Varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Viognier, with more being added. This family owned winery has received numerous gold, platinum, and best of show medals for their wines, including their 2002 Syrah which was rated #33 in the World, according to Wine Spectator's Top 100. Winemaker Debbie Hansen
Debbie began her education and career in pharmacy. She and her husband, Dave (a veternarian) developed an interest in wine while practicing in the San Francisco area. Both WSU alumni, and raised in Washington they knew they would eventually return to the northwest. When they did, they chose to farm apples, and later, grapes. In 1998 Debbie returned to college at UC Davis, to study enology, where her science background was put to use in a new way. Now she is dedicated to making fine wine from the superb fruit that Dave cultivates on their 3 estate vineyards.Also, in 2005, Brian Carlson joined the team. An enologist and winemaker for many years (most recently with Waterbrook, for 13 years), he brings a fine palate and skilled methods to the winery as they increase production and build a new winery.

When the sub-zero temperatures of the winter of 2004 damaged our estate vineyards, Willard Family Farms made room for us in their vineyard. Crafted in the style of our estate Cabernet Franc with aromas of violets, currants and lavender that combine with a rich mouthfeel and long finish. Well balanced acidity and tannins mean you will enjoy this wine now and for years to come.

Selected lots from two of our estate vineyards were chosen for depth of color and distinctive flavors. These were blended to create a wine bursting with cherry, mulberry, marionberry, licorice, cardamom, and mace. Discreet, but firm acidity and tannins provide the framework for a lush mouthfeel, and a savory, luxurious finish of leather, caramel, and spice. Beautiful now and for years to come.

This wine opens with a ripe bouquet of bing cherry, red fruits, violets, anise, and a color that is dense, dark and ruby.
