Farming is in our blood. Our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all made their living working the land. Eastern Washington is in our blood. We came here as young children and have always called it home. When we planted our first vines in 1997 we were entering uncharted territory. Today, we farm 12 distinct estate vineyard sites totaling nearly 2,000 acres. Our grapes are purchased by some of the most prestigious wineries in the state. Our own winery, launched in 2005, produces highly-individualistic wines from our estate and neighboring vineyards.
Jim McFerran, one of the foremost viticulturists in Washington, joined us back in 1997 to help with the intricacies of planting. We were very careful about matching the right variety to the right site. Our goal was to be the best growers in the state. From the start, demand for our grapes was immediate and overwhelming.
As farmers, there is nothing more satisfying than controlling the quality and style of your product from start to finish. In June of 2007 we launched the Milbrandt Vineyards label.

    Winemaker Josh Maloney
Josh Maloney was born in Corning, New York, in 1973; but he grew up on the move. His father's job transferred the family across New York State and then to Iowa, Missouri and Illinois. Following high school, Josh went to college at Cornell where he studied chemistry. During his final semester, he took a wine appreciation course through the university's hotel management program - and it completely captivated him. "I had an emotional reaction to it," he said. "I knew I needed to be a part of the wine world."
Upon leaving Cornell, he returned to Illinois and took a sales job for the Chicago Wine Company. While he tasted and learned a lot about great wine, he missed science. A family connection in New York State helped him obtain an assistant winemaker job at the Heron Hill Winery in the Finger Lakes region. "I loved it!" he said, "I found what I was supposed to be doing with my life."
In 1999, Josh moved to California for a job doing vineyard and lab work for the famous Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in the Napa Valley. A year later, he was hired as the assistant winemaker and lab manager at Estancia in Monterey County. By 2005, his skills had caught the attention of a recruiter seeking a new red winemaker for Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington State. "When I came up to visit," he said, "I was just blown away by the quality and style of Washington wines." Josh accepted the role and worked at Ste. Michelle's Canoe Ridge facility until August 2011 when he made the move to Milbrandt Vineyards as our Director of Winemaking.
When asked about what makes Washington State such a great place for wine, Josh said, "We have this amazing purity of fruit aromas combined with real texture and density in your mouth. When you taste wines from other parts of the world, they may have one or the other - but almost never both. We have both, and I love it."
When not making wine, Josh likes playing with his daughters, Fiona (5) and Daphne (3), as well as cooking alongside his wife, Lisa. "We love to cook seasonally," he said. "But my wife cooks more traditional fare from Germany and Poland, whereas I like to experiment with different techniques and ingredients. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to best cook steak over Cabernet vines that we burn in a brazier normally used to toast wine barrels."
