“Few things in life are as satisfying as a glass of truly great wine.” In establishing Fielding Hills Winery, the Wade family set out to create such wines. Combining a history in agriculture and a passion for the winemaking process, Fielding Hills produces limited quantities of highly acclaimed and sought after premium red wines. All Fielding Hills wines begin at the estate grown family owned vineyards near Mattawa, WA in the world class grape growing Wahluke Slope AVA. Perfect growing conditions at the vineyard and hand crafted wine making have produced wines showing exceptional character and varietal expression.

Winemaker Mike Wade
Mike Wade's first memory of a personal experience regarding wine is having dinner around 1980 with his Grandmother (Doris Wade) at the Chieftain Restaurant in Wenatchee, WA. He ordered a glass of house burgundy with prime rib. "I was pretty much a beer drinker at the time and I remember thinking; wow!, together with the prime rib this wine actually tastes good". Since they ate dinner together frequently he kept ordering a glass of burgundy and the experience continued to impress and grow on him.Very slowly he began to experiment with other types of wine and quickly focused on reds. "I can recall my first taste of a "premium" red wine. It was an Apex Cabernet Sauvignon (Apex is the Washington Hills premium label). It was wonderful and the hook was set!"In the mid 90's he made his first trip to the Napa Valley with friends. Napa was a wonderful experience and when touring the wineries and checking out the vineyards Mike began to ask himself if this was something he could do. But Napa is fairly intimidating. Most everything is done first class and clearly reflected the huge investment wineries have.Because Mike's day job and most of his life has been spent in agriculture he knew quite a bit about farming and processing of agricultural products. (he works for and is part owner of Columbia Fruit Packers, Inc.; a family owned apple and cherry packing warehouse which also owns several orchards). "I found many similarities between apples, cherries and grapes. My interest continued to grow."In 1997 his wife, Karen, put together a winery tour of the Lower Yakima valley. "We rented a bus and 30 of us had tons of fun. Again I continued to look at everything from a perspective of, "could I do this?" and if so where would I start?" In 1998 on another tour, this time in Walla Walla his dream took shape. It was there at a small winery outside of town that he saw a winery creating killer red wines with an operation that was visually doable. "This was my answer of what a start up could look like." In 1998 he decided to pull out some apple trees and plant a few acres of grapes at two of the orchards in Mattawa, WA. In fall of 1999 he met with the owners/winemaker of a startup winery in Walla Walla who were interested in sourcing grapes from Mike's new vineyard in Mattawa. It was Mike's extraordinary luck that this winemaker was a great guy and very willing to help him with his own winery plans.Mike's formal education is in business and his life has been spent in agriculture. Add to this a precise and particular palete, a few courses at UC Davis, the comraderie of winemakers across Washington State and you have a guy with a dream that has added sucessful winemaker to his life's accomplishments."Our grapes come from estate grown family owned vinyards in Mattawa, WA which is the Wahluke Slope AVA. Fielding Hills Winery however is located in East Wenatchee, WA in a converted orchard shop. We live on the same orchard so it makes the commute very convenient." "Our passion is to produce premium red wines. Not just the best possible, but ones that will truly stand up to the ultra premium wines made today. Key to this success will be growing world class grapes and Mattawa, where our vineyards are, is quickly becoming known as a stellar grape growing location. We create extraodinary wine capable of making any occasion a very special one". Enjoy a glass of Fielding Hills and taste the results of Mike's passion.
