The winery is located in the historic Frenchtown School just west of Walla Walla, Washington. The image of the schoolhouse is the cornerstone of the L'Ecole brand and has been the centerpiece of our wine labels since the winery's inception in 1983. The original Frenchtown School was a log cabin built in 1870 along the shore of the Walla Walla River. It was rebuilt in 1915 in at our present location. Frenchtown derived its name from the many French Canadians who settled in the Walla Walla Valley during the early 1800s. Legend has it these men of French descent raised grapes and produced wine. By the 1860s nurseries, vineyards and winemaking had become a part of the valley's growing economy. The name L'Ecole No. 41, French for "the school" located in school district 41 was chosen to salute these pioneer viticulture efforts. |

Winemaker Winemaking Team
|
As a small artisan winery, we rely on our passionate winemaking team to deliver quality in every bottle, contributing to our strong reputation for consistency and reliability. Marty Clubb is Managing Winemaker and oversees all the vineyard management and production planning. He has directed all winemaking since 1989. Mike Sharon was named Winemaker in 2006 and directs all day-to-day production and winemaking. Mike joined L'Ecole in 1996 after working at Canoe Ridge Vineyard. The wine team includes Jeff Briggs and Bill Mansker as Assistant Winemakers and Joel Fitts as Cellar Master. During harvest, Marty takes the lead in the vineyard while Mike takes the lead at the winery. The 60 year combined experience of our winemaking team helps us micro-manage 90 different vineyard lots from 30 vineyard sites for an annual harvest of approximately 550 tons of grapes. Rigorous attention to detail and state of the art enological practices keep quality at the forefront of every decision. We share a commitment to quality and excellence in all aspects of our winemaking, from vineyard to bottle. |
