Here in the Ahtanum Valley, just west of Yakima, our ancestors chose the agrarian life, all the way back in 1897. The simple joys of our rural community, and the products it bears, still speak to us today. In 2004, the fifth generation of Gilberts began the work of producing true-to-varietal wines from our vineyards in Washington state. What we found out is that wine brings us closest to family and friends and the truth and beauty that we crave. We'd rather be on our patio, candles lit, with a great dinner and a bottle of wine than almost anywhere else. We are privileged to share that with you through our wines produced with great care from grapes grown on the Wahluke Slope, in the Horse Heaven Hills, and the Ahtanum Valley. Besides making wine, we make our own fun, which involves throwing a party (or two) and inviting our favorite musicians and artists to share their talents with us. Growing and creating products and experiences that matter is both our ends and our means. We believe that what we're doing matters: we're making an authentic product that comes from the place that we love. In a time when everything comes from everywhere, our wines come from a place that isn't anywhere else. Cheers!

    Winemaker Justin Neufeld
Prior to joining Gilbert Cellars as head winemaker in 2007, Justin graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Molecular Biology. His love for the outdoors led him away from the laboratory and, after meeting Columbia Crest winemaker Doug Gore, Justin fell in love with wine and the entire winemaking process. After an internship at Chateau St. Michelle, he became the enologist for Silver Lake and then winemaker for Glen Fiona. Now at Gilbert Cellars he is dedicated to showcasing our vineyards' unique flavors through each step of the growing and winemaking process.

    2009 Malbec
  • Appellation: Wahluke Slope
  • Winemaker: Justin Neufeld
  • In 2009, intense summer heat on the sandy soils of the Wahluke Slope created beautiful expressions of dark berry in our Doc Stewart Vineyard Malbec, offering balanced structure, fruit, and an enduring finish.
  • Acclaim: 90 - The 2009 Malbec Doc Stewart Vineyard spent 17 months in 46% new French and American oak. Notes of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, lavender, and black cherry lead to a spicy, potentially complex wine with a velvety texture, good depth, and significant aging potential. Give it another 1-2 years of bottle age and drink it from 2012 to 2021. It compares favorably with similarly priced Malbecs from Mendoza, Argentina. --Jay Miller, Wine Advocate

    2009 Syrah
  • Appellation: Wahluke Slope
  • Winemaker: Justin Neufeld
  • Aromatics of blueberry, dark plum, apple wood smoke, savory herbs, and cinnamon spice rise from this elegant Syrah from our family's Doc Stewart Vineyard. Sweet dark cherry fruit and subtle thyme flavors dance gracefully with accents of smoke, spice and citrus for a rich gracious palate.
Savory and incipiently complex on the palate, it was aged for 19 months in 42% new French oak.
  • Acclaim: 92 - This dense, chewy red is jumping with blackberry, dark plum, clove and white pepper flavors, finishing smooth and polished. Expressive, displaying style and grace. Drink now through 2017. --Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator 90 - The 2009 Syrah Doc Stewart Vineyard (bottled just 1 week before I tasted it) was aged for 19 months in 42% new French oak. It displays an enticing nose of smoked meat, game, leather, and blueberry. Savory and incipiently complex on the palate, the wine has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years and will be at its best through 2019. It is a very good value. --Jay Miller, Wine Advocate

    2010 Doc Stewart Chardonnay
  • Appellation: Wahluke Slope
  • Winemaker: Justin Neufeld
  • This beautiful Chardonnay from our family's Doc Stewart Vineyard was aged for 10 months sur lie in 100% French oak, of which only 15% was new. Every two weeks winemaker Justin Neufeld stirred the lees in the traditional process known as battonage, which adds soft texture to the palate. Bright aromas of lemongrass, vanilla, sweet melon and lilac lead into fresh, concentrated flavors of Bosc pear, Braeburn apple and rosewater followed by a light yet lingering lemon cake finish.
