Winemaker Ben Papapietro Ben worked as a Teamster for a newspaper in San Francisco for 37 years. He made wine in his basement starting in 1980. Ben was following a family tradition started by his grandfather in the Mission district of San Francisco during Prohibition. Early on, his passion had been for great French Burgundies and well made pinot noir. From the beginning he wanted to make the very best wines possible in his basement. Ben had worked at several well known wineries during crush. This way he was able to get hands-on experience working with the ever interesting pinot noir grape. His friend and co-worker, soon to become business partner, Bruce Perry, was also very interested in producing high quality pinot noir. They joined together in 1985 to produce pinot noir and zinfandel from the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County. Family and friends urged the two to start a commercial winery, which they finally began in 1998. The two have continued to make the very best pinot noir and zinfandel wines possible by refining their production style and adding new vineyard sources to their line-up each year. |
