2006 was a great Grenache year and the trick to this year's wine , as it is every year, is to balance the crimson, aromatic, lean, bright, tight, crangrape, (crangrape is a made up word) tobacco, smoky, leather, earthy, Grenache, Counoise, Mourvedre, Cinsault based components with the bombastic, dark, black, licorice, plum, fruity tannic, bold, intense ripe, full-bodied Syrah I make.

This is my special little project at White Hawk. I hand picked two Syrah clones to work with the sandy soil: Clone 174 and Clone 470. 38 short rows of chardonnay were grafted over. Elegant juicy blackberry fruit with a mineral vein. Aged in 35% new American oak barrels for 2 years. 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier.
