The 2007 harvest was characterized by its split personality. After a moderate summer, a burst of heat in early September led a number of wineries to pick earlier than usual. The 2006 Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. There are only 250 cases of this cuvee, which exhibits chocolate, espresso roast, licorice, roasted herb, black currant, mocha, and wild mountain berry fruit notes. Vibrant acidity, medium to full body, and good freshness are surprising for a Napa-based wine, but the winemaking team is undoubtedly seeking freshness and vibrancy. Our 2004 selection of Merlot is an exceptionally beautiful creature. The color is inky crimson-purple. In the aroma and on the palate there are multiple layers of ripe black cherry, blackberry, black raspberry, dried blueberry, plum, fig and fresh red raspberry. The wine has a luscious quality about it, it is full bodied, complex, and boasts a lingering finish. It will most certainly leave you wanting more.

We are also very partial to our 2005 Columbia Valley Merlot. It is an excellent right-bank Bordeaux styled wine (86% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc) that reflects the personality of the vintage. Hints of lavender, smoky meat, Asian spices, and minerals enhance the black and cherry fruit. Big and seamless, this wonderfully balanced wine should mature around 2011 and age gracefully for 20 years or longer.

Made exclusively with grapes from vines that we planted, watch over and harvest from Flying Fox Vineyard. The vineyard is on a south slope in Afton, with rich soils and lots of sun. The 2005 vintage was aged in old and new French and American oak barrels for 15 months. The tannins in the Merlot are softened with our Cabernet Franc grapes. Fermented dry, with oak, cherry and spice flavors and aromas. Drink now or age up to five years. This wine is delightful with cheeses or red meats.
