The color is a deep garnet. The nose greets you with aromas of blackberry, plum, strawberry jam, licorice, dried figs, and dates. The brandy preserves the natural sweetness of the grapes. At this point the two are perfectly integrated, there are no power struggles, the wine is balanced. The result is a fortified gem with loads of fruit and a long powerful finish.

Grapes arrived in excellent condition with Brix of 24.8º and were destemmed immediately. Following a cold soak of 3 1/2 days, the must was yeasted. After fermentation was stopped by the addition of high proof wine spirits, the wine was allowed to settle out for almost 7 weeks before going into old (5+years) American oak barrels just before Christmas 2002. Starboard Batch 88 - The grapes in Batch 88 are primarily Tinta Roriz from the Madera area. The vineyard is managed to give loose bunches and a small crop. The blend is smooth and soft with a chocolate raisin character. Several different vintages are used in the blend which has an average age of about 5 years. In the port business this type of blend is called "Vintage Character."
